The Degree Works degree evaluation tool is designed to assist advisors and students with course planning, measuring progress toward program completion, and curriculum advising.
The degree evaluation is based on catalog term and indicates degree requirement conditions that are "met" and "not met" by analyzing a student's grades and GPA, credit hours, and completed course work against University, college, and departmental requirements for specific courses/majors/programs. General Education, Minor and University Writing requirements are also included in the degree evaluation for undergraduate students.
How to access Degree Works
- Log in to the ODU Portal:Ìý

- Once you are logged into the portal, click theÌýDegree WorksÌýbutton on the left sidebar or under the "My Favorite Apps" section.
- Degree Works will open in a new window. If you use a pop-up blocker you should add *.odu.edu to the Pop-up Blocker exceptions list in your pop-up blocker settings menu.

This feature allows students to compare their current academic history to the requirements of different programs with or without additional "future" class options included in the hypothetical. This can be useful to students who are considering switching majors or who are "major shopping."

To run a What-If/Future Classes analysis:

- Access Degree Works using the instructions above.
- °ä±ô¾±³¦°ìÌýWhat IfÌý(located directly under the section containing your student information)
- If you would like to use theÌýFuture ClassesÌýtool with your current curriculum, simply check theÌýUse current curriculumÌýbox and add courses (one by one, in alphabetical order) in theÌýFuture Classesarea. Once all desired "future" courses are added, clickÌýProcessÌýto produce a What-If audit using those hypothetical courses. Scroll down to see the What-If audit.
- If you would like to see how your audit would look using a different program (with or without future classes added in):
- Select the catalog year you'd like to use. The default should be your current catalog year (recommended to leave this as-is). Please note that your catalog year cannot be earlier than your admit date to the University.
- Select the desired degree.
- Select the appropriate level (Undergraduate or Graduate). Recommended to leave this as-is.
- Select the desired major.
- Select the desired minor, if applicable.
- Select the desired concentration, if applicable.ÌýNOTE: For Undergraduate students, concentrations will not be used from catalog year 2023 onward.
- When you have finished selecting your What-If curriculum items (and have added any desired future classes, if applicable), click theÌýProcessÌýbutton.
- Scroll down to see the What-If audit.
Reminders regarding the What-If/Future Classes Analysis tool:

- What-If audits are not saved, but you can print the What-If audit using theÌýPrintÌýbutton at the top of the page.
- Keep theÌýIn-progress classesÌýandÌýPreregistered classesÌýboxes checked if you would also like the audit to take your current registrations into account.
- You can use theÌýFuture ClassesÌýfeature along with the feature that shows you a different program.
- Very Important: When choosing hypothetical curriculum items for your What-If audit, be sure to check your catalog year to ensure the items you choose are available to you under that catalog year. TheÌýWhat-IfÌýfeature cannot check to make sure particular curriculum items (such as a given degree, major, or concentration) are available to a student in a given catalog year.
- For Undergraduate students, no concentrations will be available after the 2022 catalog year.
The first section of the degree evaluation report summarizes your curriculum information and provides a list of items such as overall GPA, overall hours, academic standing, and catalog year. This area is referred to as theÌýstudent card.
The body of the audit is divided into sections, orÌýblocks. All audits begin with a Degree or Certificate block, with related blocks listed below. Some examples of blocks you might see are Degree Requirements, Lower Division General Education Requirements, Departmental Requirements, Major Requirements, Concentration Requirements, Upper Division General Education Requirements, Minor Requirements, General Electives, Withdrawn, Failed, Repeated, and Grade Forgiveness Courses, In-progress and Current Registrations, and various other blocks for program-specific requirements.

- Degree/Certificate RequirementsÌýinclude overall requirements for the specific degree or certificate you are pursuing. These may also set forth minimum credit hours and minimum GPA requirements for your program. All Undergraduate students at ODU must earnÌýat leastÌý120 credit hours to graduate with the first Bachelor's degree. Some Undergraduate programs may require additional hours. Elective hours may be used if you have met all course requirements for your Undergraduate program but have not met the 120-hour requirement. Please consult with your advisor for guidance.
- Lower Division General Education RequirementsÌýare the lower-division University requirements that all undergraduate students must complete.
- Departmental RequirementsÌýare specific to each program. Some courses may be counted in the major GPA, but usually are not. Lower-Division requirements may appear in this area if they are program-specific.
- Major RequirementsÌýinclude all courses necessary to complete the major. The major area will include all major courses taken and enforces the major GPA requirement for the program.
- Concentration RequirementsÌýinclude all courses necessary to complete a specific concentration associated with a major.
- Upper Division General Education RequirementsÌýinclude the requirements for Option D or minors (Undergraduate students only). The Upper Division requirement may also be met automatically in certain majors or may be met with a second major, degree, or Professional Education requirements. This will depend on each individual program.
- Student Attributes and ActivitiesÌýincludes information on select student attributes and grade forgiveness attempts remaining (for Undergraduates), as well as links to the Senior/Graduate assessments and graduation application. This area is optional so does not need to be fully complete for your audit to reach 100%; however, you must apply for graduation to be considered for degree conferral.
- General ElectivesÌýinclude all passed courses that do not apply toward any specific program requirements. If permitted, your department may request that courses from this area be applied to specific requirements within your degree audit. Some restrictions apply.
- Withdrawn, Failed, Repeated and Grade Forgiveness CoursesÌýincludes courses that are not counting in earned hours (for various reasons) and may not be used toward any requirements in the audit. Please note that students may not receive credit more than once for a course or its equivalent, unless the course is designated as repeatable for credit.
- In-progress and PreregisteredÌýincludes a list of your in-progress (current term) and preregistered (future term) courses. Incomplete courses will also show here until a final grade is posted.
- ExceptionsÌýwill only appear if exceptions have been applied to your audit (such as allowing one course to count in place of another). Exceptions can only be requested by your academic department and must fall within certain permitted parameters. Exception requests may or may not be granted.
- NotesÌýwill only appear if an advisor or staff member has added a note to your Degree Works audit. Notes commonly include advising meeting recaps and/or instructions for students.
Very Important: While some courses may appear as options in more than one area of your Degree Works audit, sharing between sections is restricted (depending on the curriculum). Do not assume that a given course will count toward more than one area.
TheÌýStudent PlannerÌýallows you to build and save a term-by-term list of courses you plan to take. You can have multiple plans, but only one "active" and "locked" plan is recommended. Please check with your advisor to see if you are required to create a plan for your program. Even if not required, the planner can be a helpful tool to keep you organized and on-track during your time at ODU.
