Old à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã University's Police Department has been awarded a $10,000 grant to purchase state-of-the-art safety equipment for officers.

The grant was provided by the University Educational Foundation's à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fund for Parents, which was founded by the Office of Development.

"We want to keep the campus community and our officers safe. We will continue to invest in the latest technology, and we are extremely thankful for the donation," ODU Police Chief Rhonda Harris said.

Funds given to the à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fund also are allocated to other areas, such as the student health services center, student emergency fund, student involvement and the career management center.

"This was a great opportunity for the Educational Foundation and the à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fund for Parents to support the police department, which is obviously critical for the safety of our students and the protection of our officers," said Dan Genard, associate vice president for advancement with the Office of Development. "We view our role in fundraising as being able to provide a margin of excellence whether it's supporting students, faculty research, building projects or the police department."

The à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fund for Parents is a special giving program for parents of current and past students. Gifts to the à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã Fund for Parents not only improve campus life, but they also increase the overall quality of an Old à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã education. Parents play a vital role in enriching the quality of life for ODU students through this initiative. This philanthropic support allows the administration to make investments in campus programs and facilities vital to campus life that would not otherwise be possible.

The Educational Foundation was formed in 1955 to receive, administer and distribute funds and property in the furtherance of the educational activities and objectives of the University. It also provides substantial support to the University's academic programs through endowments and annual gifts. Support includes funding faculty chairs and professorships, scholarships, research and capital construction projects.
