Old à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã University's popular Science Pubs lecture series will be held at the Coelacanth Brewing Company and will focus on cyber research and resiliency.

The Jan. 24 event, "Cybersecurity: Safely Navigating the Digital Landscape," will be hosted by Hongyi "Michael" Wu, director of Old à£à£Ö±²¥Ðã's Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research and Sachin Shetty, an associate professor in the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center. Networking begins at 6 p.m. and the program will start at 6:30 p.m.

Wu's research interests include networked cyber-physical systems for security, safety, and emergency management applications. He will discuss new cyber threats and, security and privacy challenges with the advent of the Internet-of-Things.

The Internet-of-Things is a network of internet-connected objects able to collect and exchange data using embedded sensors.

"While the Internet-of-Things is embraced as important tools for efficiency and productivity, it is becoming an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals," Wu said.

Shetty's research focuses on the modeling and analysis of threats to protect the next generation Internet, cloud, mobile systems and critical infrastructures. He will discuss the need to understand and quantify cyber resilience and how the availability of cyber resilience metrics will support risk management & mitigation decisions.

"The cyberattacks on our nation has turned the spotlight on the need for cyber resilience," Shetty said. These threats are becoming more commonplace."
